The Iron Fire near Eureka, Juab County, grew to over 24,000 acres this weekend. No homes have been lost but Eureka remains under evacuation due to the fire. Residents near Salt Lake's Red Butte Canyon urged to prepare to evacuate if needed, due to the Bonneville Fire. The Hastings Fire in Tooele County grew to 6,000 acres as crews continue suppression efforts. The Middle Fork Fire near Huntsville is now at 334 acres; people told to avoid campground. And, down by Utah’s southern border, Arizona wildfires burn thousands of acres as Nevada smoke reaches Kanab.

1611 - Henry Hudson and 8 others are set adrift by mutineers. They are never seen again.
1775 - Congress issues Continental currency
1870 - US Congress creates the Department of Justice
1906 - Anne Spencer Morrow (Lindbergh) is born. The wife of Charles Lindbergh and the mama of kidnapped and murdered baby Charlie, she was also the first woman in the US to earn a glider pilot's license and earned the Hubbard Gold Medal from the National Geographic Society in 1934 for over 40,000 miles of exploration flying. In addition, she was a best-selling author.
1909 - Katherine Dunham is born. She was a dancer and choreographer that combined African movement and classical ballet.
1918 - Cicely Saunders is born. She was an English nurse, physician and writer who founded the first modern hospice.
1941 - Germany invades the Soviet Union
1944 - FDR signs the GI Bill, a bill that helped millions of returning American soldiers. However, lingering racial tensions made it difficult for black veterans to receive all benefits promised.
1970 - President Richard Nixon signed an extension of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that lowered the minimum voting age to 18.
1992 - The U.S. Supreme Court, in R.A.V. v. City of St. Paul, unanimously ruled that “hate crime” laws that banned cross burning and similar expressions of racial bias violated free-speech rights.
2015 - South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley calls for the removal of the Confederate flag from statehouse grounds in wake of killings in a Charleston church.
